The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Do you remember the book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day from your childhood? Yesterday I had the adult version of that. It was the kind of day when you instinctively know it's not going to go well from the time the alarm sounded. Without getting into all the gory details, let me sum it up by saying we went grocery shopping (2 stores out of 3) in a light rain; one store involved miniature shopping carts; there were countless spills, falls and 1 big face plant that burst a lip.

Although it was a day I didn't enjoy, it was a good exercise on Gratitude. Each night before I go to sleep, after I say my prayers, I reflect on 4 things from the day that I am especially grateful for. Things like "roof over my head" or "food in the fridge" are a given. The point is to be specific and recognize the small things. Admittedly, it is easier some nights than others. Last night was a real stretch. Here's what I came up.
1. A sweet husband who came home on time from work and made dinner while I went to Store #3.
2. Store #3 being 3 minutes down the road and having 95% of what I needed.
3. The Redbox free rental of Toy Story 3 that gave my children much pleasure and gave me an hour of wiggle-free hair tightening time for Janie. (It's a dreadlock thing.)
4. Ian and Janie - although they drove me up one wall and down the other, the worst day with them is better than the best day without them.
