Gunpowder Green

Today a sweet friend came to play with her 3 children. While the kids played I brewed a pot of Gunpowder green tea to share. This tea is rolled into small pellets, much like how gunpowder was during the 17th century which is where the name comes from. My friend is British and quite the tea connoisseur. I wondered what she would think of it. Would it be too astringent? unpleasant to drink? Thankfully she enjoyed the tea and didn't find it to be bitter at all. Honey (stirred in to hide a poor flavor) was not required. :-)

Today I brewed the tea using common kitchen tools.
1.) I heated the water to 170*F in a pot on our stove. To gauge the temperature I stuck a probe thermometer into the water. This is a handy gadget that beeps when whatever it is inserted into gets to the temperature the user has preprogrammed. It's also really useful when I cook a turkey.
2.) While I waited for the thermometer to beep, I measured out the tea leaves (1 tsp. per cup) and placed them into a Pyrex liquid measuring cup.
3.) Then I poured the water into the measuring cup and set a timer for 3 minutes.
4.) I placed a fine mesh colander (to catch the leaves) over the teapot and poured the tea into it.
If I made just one cup of tea I would have placed the colander over a mug or teacup.

Anticancer Note: Green tea contains ECGC, which is documented to significantly slow the growth of many types of cancer (including breast, prostate, and mouth cancer).
