I was shocked to read the Anticancer recommendation to avoid placental products (common in hair products for black people) as much as possible. 'Gross. Ewww. Yuck. Not in my baby's hair!' immediately popped in my mind. A quick search online for additional information found evidence that children who use such products tend to have premature sexual development. Hmmm, possibly an increased risk and early sexual development all for the sake of a hair product. Hold the placenta please!
What's a mama to do? Janie has beautiful, very curly hair that needs moisture to get through the day (and night). What we use for a leave in conditioner is a simple mixture of olive oil (1 tablespoon) and distilled water (8 ounces). We mix it up in a spray bottle and shake before (and sometimes during) use. Janie's hair is soft, supple and happy to be vegan.
Oil and water, awesome. So often there are such simple solutions. When we're used to all store bought and labels that hide ingredients and the real story behind advertising claims, it can be a leap of faith to switch over to simpler home solutions which are usually healthier for both the self and others in many ways.
