Adventures in Dishwashing - Product Review

I can hardly believe what I'm about to type - my kids fight over who gets to wash the dishes with Mama. Frequently I alternate whose turn it is "Okay guys, Janie washed after breakfast so it's Ian's turn after lunch." A good dilemma to have, I think.

Currently I am phasing out all harsh-on-the-environment or questionable cleaning products out of our home. Much of what we use is homemade and pretty basic. The few items I do purchase are being selected with greater care when I need to refill our stock. One such product is hand dishwashing detergent. Our family generates a huge amount of dishes since 3 of 4 usually eat 3 meals per day at home. I am disenchanted with my dishwasher because I usually wind up rewashing some by hand. The very idea of rinsing aggravates me. In my mind a dishwashers job is to wash the dishes, not have me pre-wash first. If I actually did that the dishwasher would only be eliminating one step out of the entire wash-rinse-dry-put away process. But I digress....

Did you know that manufacturer's are not required by law to list ingredients on cleaning products? Even the ones that look 'green' do not always volunteer this information. (Think about some of the clear dishswashing detergents at Big Box stores.) Last month or so I tried out a new dishwashing soap called BioKleen. The ingredients were listed and appeared to be ec0-friendly thus friendly to humans too.

Pros:

1.) Smelled good.

2.) Left my hands feeling soft and not dried out.

3) Did a good job cleaning our mountain of dishes.

Cons:

1) Expensive! Over $5 for a 32 oz. bottle.

2) Suggested that 1 oz. be used per load - At that rate I'd need 2 bottles per month!

Stay tuned for next month's review on Ecover hand dishwashing detergent.

Anticancer Action Step:

Common commercial cleaning products (dishwashing detergents, floor cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners) often contain carcinogenic materials. Replace them with green or European Ecolabel products.
