My kids LOVE yogurt. If I take them to the grocery store with me they beg for individual cups of yogurt. The vivid labels draw them to it flies to honey. An amazing quantity of sugar keeps asking for more. Seriously, I have to avoid the back wall of the refrigerated section if I don't want it to come home with me. I will admit that the convenience of individual portion size yogurts is awesome. The trash it generates is not so much.
To cut the trash and the sugar I mix equal parts of flavored organic yogurt (it doesn't have ingredients I can't pronounce or odd colors) and plain yogurt together. The kids love to help stir. Then we portion it out into little 4 oz. canning jars. They are ready whenever the kids crave it (such as for breakfast). I also really appreciate that the time spent in plastic packaging is minimized.
Anticancer Notes: Research shows that sugar consumption and cancer development is directly related. It is also documented that chemotherapy is less effective when sugar is consumed beforehand.
I was thinking that for all the things we discussed this evening, I know we talked about the yogurt briefly... :-) I was going to say that I do have a yogurt maker, and maybe some weekend we could get the kids together for a yogurt party. It takes some processing time, but the prep can be a fun little project, perhaps?
ReplyDeleteThat would be fun! Let's plan to do that soon. :-)
