While I applaud people who choose to purchase organic clothing, I have decided to focus on finding quality recycled clothing for myself and family. This is a fancy way of saying "used" of course. Our area has an abundance of consignment and thrift stores. In addition to finding treasures at extremely low prices purchasing from them, I am also decreasing the demand for new conventionally produced clothes. The ripple effect of this reduces the effect of pesticides being used. A bonus of purchasing recycled clothes that they are all pre-shrunk thus no worries if something will fit properly once washed!
A wonderful blessing came my way this morning with the La Leache League Clothes Swap. Our local chapter organized a fundraiser ($5 family to participate) that involved women joining together and trading clothes with each other. It was such fun to visit with the other women and find treasures to take home. I am excited about my *new* clothes and both kids are too.
Majority of our clothes I get used. I liked Fville's thrift scene. Amazingly there's an even better thrift store down here. I walk over every 2 or 3 months once they've rotated the inventory. But I get my nice jackets and careerish stuff off Ebay....... If you have to ship it does that make up for pesticides? Who knows.
ReplyDeleteMy dad grew up on a cotton farm. I never did really understand growing up why mom would make us come inside when those little planes (crop dusters) flew around.
